Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

Understanding Blepharoplasty Operation

Due to various factors like environmental exposure and aging, facial features can undergo changes. In such cases, plastic and cosmetic surgeries offer solutions. Among these procedures, Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift) surgery stands out as a popular choice.

With time, the muscles surrounding the eyes may weaken, leading to sagging of the upper and lower eyelids and eyebrows, as well as the formation of under-eye bags. Blepharoplasty, commonly known as Eyelid Lift surgery, addresses these concerns by tightening the eyelids. This procedure, performed in Turkey as a cosmetic surgery, involves the removal of excess skin, natural creases, and accumulated fats from both the upper and lower eyelids. The goal is to reshape the eyelids to enhance the overall appearance of the eyes.

Typically lasting about two hours, the surgery covers both upper and lower eyelids. In some instances, patients may opt to combine Blepharoplasty with a brow lift for a more comprehensive rejuvenation.

While minor side effects like swelling may occur, they typically resolve within one to two weeks. The results of upper eyelid surgery typically last 5-7 years, while revisions for lower eyelid surgery are rare due to its long-lasting effects.

Who Is Suitable For Blepharoplasty Operation

To be considered a suitable candidate for Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift), individuals should be in good health without any conditions that could complicate the procedure or pose risks afterward. Common factors that might disqualify a candidate include:

  • Thyroid issues, Dry eyes, and Hypertension.

  • Circulatory problems and Cardiovascular conditions.

  • Diabetes.

  • Retinal detachment and Glaucoma.

  • Psychological stability and realistic expectations are essential.

  • Candidates should generally be at least 35 years old.

Pre-Operative Instructions For Blepharoplasty

Here are some essential guidelines for patients to adhere to before undergoing eyelid lift surgery:

  • Complete any necessary medical tests as required.

  • Take prescribed medications recommended by your doctor to prepare for the surgery. Inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking.

  • Refrain from smoking for at least a month prior to the surgery. Avoid consuming aspirin, NSAIDs, or herbal supplements known to increase bleeding and swelling for at least two weeks before the operation.

  • Avoid stimulants like Arabic coffee and alcohol for at least two weeks before the procedure, as they may interfere with anesthesia. Additionally, refrain from consuming blood thinners such as green tea, as they can lead to excessive bleeding and hinder the recovery process.

Blepharoplasty Procedure Steps

There are various approaches to performing Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift), but at Turkeyana Clinic, we prioritize surgical techniques due to their consistent and successful outcomes. The procedure typically comprises three straightforward stages:

  • Anesthesia: To ensure patient comfort and pain-free surgery, either general or local anesthesia is administered based on the surgeon's assessment of the patient's needs and preferences.

  • Surgical Incision: Careful planning ensures incisions are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring. For the upper eyelid, incisions are made within natural eyelid creases, allowing the surgeon to address excess fat, tighten muscles, and remove or reposition sagging skin. Similarly, for the lower eyelid, incisions are made beneath the lower lash line to address fat deposits and achieve consistent contouring.

  • Closure of Incisions: Following the necessary adjustments, the surgeon closes the incisions using stitches, which are typically removed after one week during a follow-up appointment.

Post-Operative Guidelines for Blepharoplasty

To ensure a smooth and speedy recovery process, it's essential to adhere to specific instructions in the days following your surgery:

  1. Apply ice packs to the eyes for ten minutes every hour immediately after the procedure, using cold compresses. Repeat this four to five times daily during the initial days of recovery.

  2. Thoroughly cleanse the eyelids with prescribed eye drops and ointments as directed by your surgeon.

  3. Avoid stress and strenuous activities for at least one week post-surgery, as these may impede healing.

  4. Abstain from swimming for a minimum of one week following the procedure.

  5. Refrain from engaging in rigorous exercise for at least one week after surgery.

  6. Cease smoking for at least one week to promote optimal healing.

  7. Avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes to prevent any potential harm. Do not wear contact lenses for at least two weeks post-operation.

  8. Wear protective black glasses when exposed to sunlight or wind to shield the eyelids.

  9. When lying down or sleeping, elevate your head above your chest level for a few days following the surgery.

  10. Refrain from consuming blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, or herbal supplements for at least one week post-surgery, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
